About Bluebridge Alliance
The BlueBridge Alliance emerged from a profound act of compassion. In 2011, a San Diego Police Officer was captured on video buying a snack for a hungry neighborhood child, moments before tragically losing his life in an unprovoked assassination. His selfless act sparked a powerful question in the mind of BlueBridge co-founder Brian Spracklen: What if every officer had the resources to offer similar kindness in moments of vulnerability?
In response to Brian’s idea, Kennewick, Washington Police Chief Ken Hohenberg – an old friend – alongside community leaders, launched a program in 2015 that provided officers with those resources. This highly successful initiative had a profound impact on community/police relations in Kennewick. Inspired by this success, the BlueBridge Alliance was formed in 2020 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to bring this innovative model to communities nationwide. Since its founding, BlueBridge has aided thousands of individuals through its partnership with almost two dozen law enforcement agencies (and rapidly growing!) and over 400 participating officers, serving a population of over three million people.
Why We Do What We Do
Our Goals (our purpose for existing):
- To relieve suffering by providing immediate, on-the-spot, short-term assistance to those in urgent need.
- To strengthen (and where necessary, restore) mutual trust and respect between the police and the members of the community they serve.
- To boost police morale and renew officers’ service ethos, leading to improved recruitment and retention.
The results (the desired outcome of our efforts):
- Increased public safety
- An improved quality of life in our communities
How the Program Works
We serve law enforcement agencies with a community-supported program that allows officers to provide on-the-spot assistance to individuals facing immediate needs. Equipped with BlueBridge debit cards funded through local donations, officers can offer a “hand-up” in bleak situations by providing food, clothing, fuel, temporary shelter, transportation, or some other form of assistance. This immediate relief often serves as a bridge until longer-term support can be accessed.
Our approach strengthens the crucial relationship between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve, boosts officer morale, and ultimately contributes to safer, more connected communities. We believe in the innate goodness of people and the power of compassionate action.
Please consider helping us grow and deliver this valuable program to your community and others through donations and/or getting involved as a volunteer.
